2. Vertical Straight Stack

Just like the guards at Buckingham Palace, these “soldier stacks” stand firm and tall. Installing tile vertically creates the illusion of height in your space. Vertically stacked subway tile will make your space feel contemporary, while rectangular large-format tile makes your space feel both taller and more expansive.

3. 1/2 Offset Brick Lay

There’s a reason why 1/2 offset is one of the most traditional layouts. The simple enhancement of offsetting stacked tiles by 50% is visually appealing and helps hide any imperfections in the installation. Use subway or rectangle tile to achieve a classic brick-lay look, or square tile for a chic offset design.

4. 1/3 Offset Brick Lay

The stair-step effect in this pattern is created by offsetting each tile by 1/3 of its length. We recommend using a 1/3 offset when designing with tile that is 8 x 16 in. or larger. Shop large-format tile to achieve this stylish design on your floors or walls.

5. Herringbone

Install large or small rectangle tile at a 45-degree angle to create a dynamic herringbone pattern. You can enhance the vertical and horizontal zigzag movements by incorporating different colors, finishes or a contrasting grout color.

6. Double Herringbone

A double herringbone is created by connecting two rectangle tiles. This layout is less common because it can be difficult to perfect. However, when executed correctly, as seen in this contemporary bathroom designed by Friedman General Contracting, the results are stunning!

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to consider your grout color! A contrasting grout will accentuate your layout, while a grout that matches the tile results in a subtler design.

7. Chevron

Like herringbone, a chevron pattern creates a dynamic, zigzag design. However, this layout is created by connecting the angled ends of specially cut tiles, rather than installing rectangular tiles diagonally. The result is a fashionable V-shaped silhouette.

8. Grid

A tried-and-true design, this layout is created by simply arranging square tiles in a grid formation. It is ideal for patterned tile, especially when the pattern is enhanced by grouping four squares together, as it is on the Kelli Fontana Inlay Proper Florence Lace tile shown here.

9. Diagonal

Similar to the grid pattern, this layout consists of rows of square tile. However, as it is installed at a 45-degree angle, this pattern makes your floor or wall appear wider. We love how Timber Trails used this layout to add a contemporary twist to the classic checkerboard design. You can achieve a similar look using diamond-shaped tile.

10. Versailles

Named after the French Palace of Versailles, this classically elegant pattern consists of rectangles and squares of varying sizes. While the Versailles pattern is commonly used for floor designs, it’s also striking on walls.

11. Hex

The six-sided, honeycomb-shaped hex is a surprisingly versatile tile shape. Available in small mosaic formats and larger field tiles (up to 13 x 14 in.), all hexagon tile adheres to the same layout. However, the uniformity of similarly-sized hex tiles allows for custom patterns. You have collaborated with other brands to develop a variety of home decor items—furniture, rugs, wallpaper. What made you decide to expand your signature “global modern” style to tile?  

As a designer, I’m always noticing products that are missing from the market. That’s been my success with my other lines; I want to design the items–oversized patterns on wallpaper and pillows, and neutral area rugs–that I’m not finding as I shop. So, when The Tile Shop came to me and said ‘we’d love to do a collaboration,’ it was a natural choice because tile is essentially a wallpaper that can be used where wallpaper isn’t ideal, like wet spaces. I like that versatility–I can bring my designs to spaces where you wouldn’t traditionally find something so bold and graphic.

We love the bold graphic designs featured in your new collection! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the Zulu and Tangier patterned tiles? 

Both the Zulu and Tangier are derived from other products in my home collections. The Zulu tile is based on a top-selling wallpaper I designed for York Wallcoverings. The Tangier tile originated from a rug that’s been in my line for 10 years. My clientele love this pattern, so I’m excited to offer it in tile form.

The impetus for my designs comes from textiles–prints and patterns I found in India, Indonesia and Africa. I take that inspiration and I create my signature bold, graphic and simple hand-drawn designs.

You kept to a neutral color palette for these designs. What about these tones appeals to you?

My personal design style is very monochromatic. I like using a neutral color palette and infusing it with global patterns and textures. I gravitate towards neutrals for the main elements then add color in ways that aren’t so permanent, creating this subtle and soft palette. That’s why Zulu and Tangier really work. They’re giving that neutral color palette with that great pattern, which can be challenging to find on the market.

What’s your top tip for choosing a color palette when designing a room?

When I’m working with a client who is unsure about what color to use, I advise them to to look in their closet–the clothes you buy will often reveal the colors you gravitate towards. When designing a space that has three bathrooms–a powder bath and two main baths–I say to the client, ‘if you want to have fun, let’s have fun in the powder bath.’ That way you don’t have to commit to seeing it every day, and it will be a nice surprise for your guests. Take risks there, and play it safe and neutral in the main bathrooms. So if there’s a tile that stands out to you but you’re having second thoughts because it may be too bold or too colorful, a powder bath is the perfect place to experiment.

You have said before that mixing tile is an art. Can you describe your approach to designing with tile?  

The advice I give is to pick a main tile to pull your colors from. So, if you’re using a large-format marble with a lot of movement and a few different colors, you start by breaking those colors out, and pairing them with a subway or penny tile in a coordinating color. I usually stick to three tiles–a main tile, a backsplash tile and a mosaic floor tile.

You’ve mentioned bathrooms–would you say that’s your favorite room to design or do you have another space that’s also a favorite?

I love designing kitchens! When people think of kitchens, they usually imagine the traditional look of upper and lower cabinets and maybe an island, but I’m all for the design trend that reduces the amount of cabinetry to create a beautiful space that can be used for entertaining, cooking and working.

I’m renovating my kitchen in Florida and I’m removing half the cabinetry and installing glass shelves with a brass bar back, but I’m still creating storage space. It’s an alternative that allows for a lot of flexibility–you can tile from the counter all the way to the ceiling for a luxe look.

An extended Nikki Chu Tile collection is already in the works. What designs, colors or shapes can customers look forward to?

In phase two of my collection, I plan to introduce a carefully veined marble-look tile that coordinates with the other colorways in the collection. I’d also like to design a mosaic that can be used for smaller budget bathroom renovations.

What is your favorite aspect of your collaboration with The Tile Shop? 

My favorite part of the process is working with The Tile Shop team! They’re fun, clever and so knowledgeable! I love the social team, the photography team. I’ve been blown away with the assets they created. I spent a year and a half developing this product, and it’s been super exciting to see how the marketing team put it all together.

And of course, I love working with Kirsty [Froelich, Director of Design] because she’s so knowledgeable about the company and the customer. She was pivotal in ensuring we had a product that fit with my and The Tile Shop’s brands.

Create a Checkerboard

As classy as it is cheery, a checkerboard pattern will add some fun and whimsy to your space. And this versatile pattern needn’t be relegated to black-and-white floors. Any square-shaped tile can make a checkerboard, so you can mix colors and patterns to create a winning design. You can even stay neutral like Racheal Jackson of Banyan Bridges did for this grey and white checkerboard backsplash. We love how the handmade look tile adds texture to this kitchen wall, and how she used color to create a dopamine-inducing tableau.

Pick Two to Three Bold Colors

A lot of colors can easily become overwhelming. To keep your room from becoming too busy, try sticking to two to three analogous colors (colors that are close to each other on the color wheel). That’s what Zig and Co. did in this bright and fun entryway. A lot is happening in this room, but there are only three colors–blue, green and yellow–which helps keep the room looking cohesive.

Use a Colorful Trim

You don’t need to saturate an entire room to showcase your favorite color. A somerset or pencil trim will add a pop of color that can tie into other elements in the room or just provide a point of interest in an otherwise neutral space. This laundry room, designed by At Home With Ashley, uses a single line of pink pencil trim to add color to the marble subway tile design. While Ashley also uses a pink floral wallpaper in this space, a white or neutral colored wall would match the tile just as well.

Pair Black and White With a Bold Color

A black-and-white tile complements virtually any color palette–a great choice if you’re considering dipping your toe into dopamine decor. This vibrant room, designed by Timber Trails, pairs the Firenze Carrara Polished Wheaton with Black marble tile with a hot pink walls. The color saturation is excellent but can be easily altered with a new coat of paint.

Have Fun With Shapes

1. I SPY DIY’s Super-Rejuvenating Spa Bathroom

In one of the most dramatic transformations of the year, I SPY DIY took this dull, utilitarian loft bathroom and re-envisioned it as a luxurious spa-like oasis complete with a soaking tub and wet room. The handmade-look Riad Grey tile creates an artisanal aesthetic of the room with their natural variations in color and surface texture, while the Royal White Hex marble floor tiles create traction and adds to the opulence of the room. By keeping the color palette in white and grey, Jenni Yolo of I SPY DIY was able to create a beautiful tableau on which the gold fixtures and pops of red accents really shine.
