Characterized by clean lines, natural materials and stylized minimalism, midcentury modern design took the United States by storm in the post-war ’50s and ’60s, never completely leaving our collective hearts. Effortlessly chic, the retro style maintains enduring appeal partly because it embraces timeless design principles. Read on to discover eight ideas for incorporating elements of the mid-1900s into your 21st-century home with this guide to midcentury tile design.

1. Add Visual Texture with Terrazzo

Terrazzo didn’t originate in the 1900s, but it was a popular midcentury flooring choice. Loved for its durability, sustainability and organic look, authentic terrazzo is made by pressing pieces of marble, glass or granite in a cement base to create a strong, decorative material that traditionally graced Rennaisance plazas. Here, Yellow Brick Home uses the Terrazzo Nero Macro tile to add visual texture to this dreamy midcentury-inspired bathroom. With a mix of warm and cool neutrals, this tile (also available in Nero Micro) adds timeless appeal in a retro format.

This beautiful bathroom features pale pink brick-look subway wall tile and a black terrazzo-look porcelain floor tile.

2. Mix Materials

Another hallmark of midcentury design is the intentional pairing of materials, particularly wood, stone and metal. Layering natural and man-made materials adds depth and dimension. Metal accents represent the progress of modernism, while the inclusion of organic materials keeps the space from appearing too sterile. This midcentury kitchen features the Palermo Noir Stone Hex tile backsplash. The black marble hexagons are accented with bronze, creating dynamic movement across the backsplash that feels both modern and timeless.

3. Choose a Retro Red

Retro interiors embraced warm earth tones, and a burnt orange or deep sienna still evokes nostalgia for our grandma’s midcentury ranch house. This bathroom, designed by @johnmartinestudio, features the Imperial Sienna square and hex mosaics. We love how the rich tone is tempered with the neutral Imperial Sand hex tile and off-white walls, but don’t be afraid to really lean into an earthy palette with red, orange or yellow tile.

4. Feature a Retro Pattern

Nothing exemplifies the midcentury quite like a bold pattern. Whether floral or abstract, the pattern should feature clean lines and geometric shapes to be considered midcentury modern. This funky ’60s-inspired kitchen, designed by Total 360 Interiors, features the Star Olive/Grey Encaustic tile. With its retro coloring and starburst pattern, it gives this retro design flower power.

5. Use Wood-Look Tile

Teak furniture and wood paneling are necessities in midcentury homes, but you can include this warm, organic look in spaces you wouldn’t normally find the natural material with durable porcelain or ceramic wood-look tile. Bathrooms, kitchen backsplashes and even showers can feature the beauty of wood. Here, the Tavola Decor tile, with its raised fluted cross pattern, adds both the look of hardwood and the geometric shapes you find in midcentury modern design.

6. Use Retro-Inspired Ceramics

Artistically speckled midcentury ceramics come to life in the form of sleek subway tiles with the Stoneware collection by Fired Earth. The soft earthy coloring and clean lines of these tiles—available in Rainwashed, Blue Mist, Indigo Spruce, Linen Brick and Powder White (shown)—transform any space with elevated retro charm. This chic living room demonstrates how you can blend midcentury decor with contemporary design elements. The Stoneware Powder White fireplace surround blends seamlessly with the white woodwork, for an elegantly timeless space.

7. Create Pattern

Midcentury modern design offers a lot of flexibility in color and form. If you can’t decide on a single earthy hue to showcase, use several to create an original pattern. Featuring all five colorways of the midcentury-inspired Fired Earth Stoneware collection, this shower strikes the right balance between sleek style and expressive design.

8. Choose Squares

A vintage tile that’s making a comeback in interior design, the 4-in. square was favored in midcentury interiors up to the 1980s. Here, Fox Homes reimagines the retro design using Zellige White Gloss tile. The handmade tile features purposeful variations in the edges—going against the grain of the famously straight, clean lines of midcentury, but they compensate for this design detail with wide grout joints. The result is a slightly uneven grid, reminiscent of midcentury modern design, but with a timeless twist suited to contemporary styles.

The latest trend in interior design is to embrace what makes you happy. Whether it be bold colors, or charming patterns this design aesthetic is about creating spaces that spark joy as soon as you enter. Keep scrolling for design inspo and tips on how to incorporate tile into your dopamine decor style.

Create a Checkerboard

As classy as it is cheery, a checkerboard pattern will add some fun and whimsy to your space. And this versatile pattern needn’t be relegated to black-and-white floors. Any square-shaped tile can make a checkerboard, so you can mix colors and patterns to create a winning design. You can even stay neutral like Racheal Jackson of Banyan Bridges did for this grey and white checkerboard backsplash. We love how the handmade look tile adds texture to this kitchen wall, and how she used color to create a dopamine-inducing tableau.

Pick Two to Three Bold Colors

A lot of colors can easily become overwhelming. To keep your room from becoming too busy, try sticking to two to three analogous colors (colors that are close to each other on the color wheel). That’s what Zig and Co. did in this bright and fun entryway. A lot is happening in this room, but there are only three colors–blue, green and yellow–which helps keep the room looking cohesive.

Use a Colorful Trim

You don’t need to saturate an entire room to showcase your favorite color. A somerset or pencil trim will add a pop of color that can tie into other elements in the room or just provide a point of interest in an otherwise neutral space. This laundry room, designed by At Home With Ashley, uses a single line of pink pencil trim to add color to the marble subway tile design. While Ashley also uses a pink floral wallpaper in this space, a white or neutral colored wall would match the tile just as well.

Pair Black and White With a Bold Color

A black-and-white tile complements virtually any color palette–a great choice if you’re considering dipping your toe into dopamine decor. This vibrant room, designed by Timber Trails, pairs the Firenze Carrara Polished Wheaton with Black marble tile with a hot pink walls. The color saturation is excellent but can be easily altered with a new coat of paint.

Have Fun With Shapes

Shape is another way to bring joy to a space. This Art Deco-inspired bathroom, designed by Bari J. Ackerman, uses tile to create a glamorous backsplash. The tiled arches mimic the rounded shapes of the mirrors and light fixtures, while the individual hexagon tiles add to the vintage allure of this charming room. You can use tile to create shapes, or choose from a uniquely shaped tile for an unexpected look that will brighten your mood.

Embrace a Bold Pattern

A bold pattern is a great way to infuse your space with fun and cheer. If you’re worried about overwhelming the room, use a neutral or solid color on the other surfaces. The Laura Ashley Sunflower Charcoal with Cloud Blue patterned floor tile shown here, pairs well with the Laura Ashley White Beveled wall tile for a space that is bright and fanciful, while still being tasteful. Explore our wide assortment of patterned tile to discover a design that fills you with happiness.

Start With a Neutral Base

Even the most charming, joy-filled room can use a place to rest your eye. A neutral tile, whether on the floor or the wall can provide some respite in a busy room. The Baltimore Beige Wood Look tile floor in this room designed by At Home With Ashley, adds to the charm of the pretty nature-inspired wallpaper, without distracting. Wood-look tile and luxury vinyl tile are perfect for adding realistic charm to your space while allowing for more creativity throughout the room.

This year has seen some great trends–cool blues, lush greens and luxurious marble looks were all en vogue. We’re sure we’ll see more of these trends in the year to come, so if you’re feeling inspired to add bathroom reno to your New Year’s Resolution, check out our full selection of bathroom tile.

10. Nikki Chu’s Serene Shower

One of our favorite 2023 trends is Quiet Luxury. Elegantly understated marble looks, simple metal accents and chic mosaics characterize this movement towards a more muted refinement. This bathroom, designed by HGTV’s Nikki Chu perfectly embodies everything we love about this trend. The soft beige and cream of the Savannah Antique marble-look tile is heightened by the gold trim and the Modena mosaic floor tile to create a soothing, luxurious space.

9. Chris Loves Julia’s Modern Colonial Bathroom

The star of this chic and sophisticated bathroom designed by Chris and Julia Marcum of the popular Chris Loves Julia blog, is the stunning custom floor using Hex Matte Black and Hampton Carrara Tumbled Hex. The black-and-white tile design is charming and contemporary, while still managing to complement the Colonial features–the wooden cabinetry, mirror and wall sconces. To create your own custom floor design, shop our hexagon and penny round tile.

8. I SPY DIY’s On-Trend Jewel-Tone Bathroom

This year, bright dazzling jewel tones were the delight of interior design. We predict this gem of a trend is here to stay, with sapphire blue and rich emeralds adding glimmer and glamour to our favorite spaces. This bathroom designed by I Spy DIY embraces deep, rich blues in the wall paint and the Marrakesh Blue tile. So as not to become too saturated with color, the Marrakesh Off White is used as a checkerboard along the shower wall, providing some respite from the jewel tones as well as a moment of whimsy. Shop our full selection of bathroom tile to create your own stunning oasis.

7. Gorgeous Jungle-Themed Bathroom

Biophilic design, with its penchant for earth and green tones and nature-inspired prints, was all the rage in 2023. Beginning as a reaction to the months spent in quarantine, this trend is all about infusing your spaces with the beauty and serenity of the outdoors. The Amazonia Emerald Tropic patterned wall tile in this shower creates a refreshing junglescape to start your day off invigorated, or recenter after a long day. The Glass Shamrock subway tile picks up the greens in the pattern, complementing the shower tile with a sleek and modern vertical stack backsplash. Shop our full selection of green tile to create your own lush interior space.

6. Craven Haven’s Boyhood Blues Bathroom

Blue was the color of the year for bathrooms (we have more blue rooms to come!). We love the rich navy used in this shower, and how the use of vertical and horizontal subway stacks to distinguish from the top and bottom of the wall. This boy’s bathroom, designed by Mackenzie from Craven Haven will mature with her sons as they grow. The blue and white shower has a boyhood charm that’s not too childish for teenagers. If you’re feeling inspired to use blue in your bathroom reno, check out our full assortment of blue tile.

5. Timber Trails Stately Soaking Tub

If you are lucky enough to have a soaking tub, then why not make it the star of the show. That’s what Timber Trails did in this bright and airy bathroom. The grey veining in the Firenze Carrara Honed marble tile adds movement and warmth to the bathroom floor, but the elegance of the tile is subtle enough that it enhances rather than detracts from the antique woven rug. The effect is open and modern while lending an air of classical luxury. Shop our full selection of marble tile to achieve your own luxurious retreat.

4. Refine Studios’ Sophisticated in Pink Washroom

This chic bathroom from Refine Studios combines unexpected elements for a look that’s as classic as it is contemporary. The worn-wood cabinetry and the Calacata Gold hex marble floor tile create organic warmth reminiscent of a bygone era, while above the sink, the sleek, black framed mirrors and candle-holder wall sconces have a contemporary look. The Annie Selke Crosshatch Soft Pink wall tile adds softness to the design, with its textile-like texture and pattern. All of these elements meld together for a stylish, sophisticated, yet totally unique bathroom. Find the perfect tile for your room design from our wide selection of bathroom tile.

3. Anna Graham Interiors’ Modern Zig-Zag Bathroom

This charming and modern bathroom designed Anna Graham Interiors is pup-approved! Cuteness factor aside, this is a space as inviting as it is stylish. The soft grey veining of the Hampton Carrara Hex floor tiles give the room warmth and movement that softens the chic black fixtures. The Imperial Gunmetal Gloss subway tiles are installed in a double herringbone pattern for an unexpected twist on the traditional. If you want to create your own elegant, yet contemporary space, browse our full assortment of bathroom tile for the perfect modern look.

2. I SPY DIY’s Relaxation Oasis

This elegant bathroom from I SPY DIY is as tranquil as it is rejuvenating. The subtle shifts in tone of the Riad Grey handmade-look tile and the Royal White marble hex floor give this bathroom a unique character that is understated enough not to compete with the room’s accent pieces. Whether you’re starting your morning with an invigorating shower or taking a soak to relieve the stress at the end of a long day, this bathroom will leave you properly revitalized or relaxed. Find these tiles and more in our bathroom tile collection.

1. Laura Ashley Blue Dreams Bathroom

And that brings us to your favorite bathroom of the year (and one of ours, too)! This bathroom decked out in our newest Laura Ashley Collection tile is as fun and whimsical as it is bold and classic. The Laura Ashley Leaf Cloud Blue mosaic shower niche, the Laura Ashley White Beveled subway tile and the Laura Ashley Sunflower Charcoal with Cloud Blue tiles create an interesting mix of shapes, all tied together with a simple blue and white color scheme. For more ideas on how you can design a bathroom that will keep its charm for years to come, browse our full selection of bathroom tile.

If you thought the transformations we featured in our first One Room Challenge reveal blog post couldn’t be matched, just wait until you see the second half!

First, we’ve got to give a huge shoutout to all ORC participants who took on this crazy challenge–you inspire us! The ambition to pull off a project of this magnitude in such a tight timeframe and the talent to make each design something special are nothing short of superpowers.

It’s been a blast following along throughout each designer’s six-week journey from ideation to execution, rooting for them and crossing our fingers that everything would fall into place just in time for the big reveal!

Without further ado…

THE LEARNER OBSERVER

First up is Thalita from The Learner Observer. This designer took on the transformation of not just one space but two! She gave her master bedroom a facelift and transformed the unfinished adjoining bathroom, creating a dual space that is not only uniquely beautiful, but fabulously functional.

“Somehow this room feels equal parts soft and feminine and moody and masculine – and, depending on the day, those words can easily all represent ME!”—Thalita

“When I was choosing tile for this space, I wanted something that felt classic, but I also wanted a bit of a punch. Because we have blue going on the wallpaper above the vanity, I thought a dark blue tile would be great here as well to tie the two spaces together as one.”—Thalita

We love the contrast between the white shower pan and the bold pop of color on the walls!

DESIGN ADDICT MOM

Stacey of Design Addict Mom was another designer that took on more than one space during the course of the challenge. In addition to completely gutting and transforming the master bathroom, she redid the small adjoining closet and gave a mini refresh to the master bedroom. Talk about a big endeavor!

Her overall goal was to transform the “dark and dated” feel of the bathroom to one that feels “bright, airy and spa-like.” We think she succeeded in a big way!

Stacey chose coordinating tile for the bathroom flooring and the shower pan, bringing cohesion to the space. “They are so pretty, and the subtle designs in the tiles add depth and interest to the space.”

As for the shower walls, she had a little fun.

“My color-loving self couldn’t resist these subway tiles from The Tile Shop, and I thought the rose color was a great opportunity to continue the coral pink color story from the master bedroom.”

I SPY DIY

This next one is GOOD. Jenni of I SPY DIY completed one of the most dramatic bathroom transformations we’ve seen! She turned the old, outdated bathroom in the 1980-built duplex she’s renovating with her husband into an absolutely dreamy space that we would never want to leave.

The bathroom before

“It feels more like an old library than a bathroom, a place where I would want to dim the lights, soak in the bath, listening to classical music and read for hours. Nothing makes me happier than giving rooms that have been abandoned in these old houses a new life and a new storyline.”—Jenni

“I’d been eyeing up this Siberian Pearl Chevron Marble tile for a while now but never had the right space for it until this bathroom. This tile is stunning! The marble is so classic and the variation in color is so beautiful. After Mr. Yolo installed it, I could not stop staring. We used London Fog grout and then sealed everything, and I have been so impressed with how resilient it’s been to footprints.”

This is only one of many amazing projects that Jenni has completed! Check out our spotlight post on Jenni here.

JEWELED INTERIORS

We can’t stop comparing the before and after pictures of this project! Jewel of Jeweled Interiors started with a kitchen full of warm-toned wooden cabinets and a living room with carpet installed in the ’90s and transformed them into a living space you’d never guess could be the same.

“I love the way the 12″ x 24″ San Dona tile brightens my entire room. The San Dona line is so pretty! There is a subtle tonal difference from piece to piece, and if you look closely, you can see small crystalline flecks.”—Jewel

“For the backsplash, we had the fun idea to use the same Tile Shop floor tile but cut it into 3-inch vertical strips. It helps my cabinets feel taller and countertops feel brighter.”

NICOLE WHITE INTERIORS

You’ve probably seen plenty of man caves…but have you ever seen a mom cave?! Nicole of Nicole White Designs turned her office and living area into a combined office and dining area with more space and a mom cave added on the side. Brilliant, right?

What’s better than a cup of coffee? A cup of coffee served at one of the most chic coffee bars we’ve ever seen!

“The Tile Shop’s Streamline Stone Mosaic tile made us all swoon!”—Nicole

“While the challenge was for one space, our old office needed a new spin, and so it was time to make it my official mom cave, a place where I can now close the doors at the end of the day and just chill!”

Hygge. You’ve probably seen this strange word floating around your social media timeline or read it on a list of the latest design trends, but what does hygge mean? Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is the Scandinavian word for coziness, comfort and well-being. By incorporating these five elements of hygge, you can foster relaxation and establish feelings of warmth in your tiled spaces.

Cozy vibes to get you in the hygge mood.

1. Soft Textures

What says comfort more than soft textures? Adding oversized blankets and pillows to a room is highly effective because they motivate guests to lounge and settle in. Timber Trails DC created the perfect place to cozy up with a good book.

Soft textured tile can be a surprising element of hygge. While tile with a high-gloss finish expresses a modern feeling (left photo below), honed and matte finishes add more warmth with their subdued edges and texture (right photo below).

By replicating a soft touched appearance, Tessuti HD Off-White provides a subtle linen pattern and matte texture. Faux fur adds a gentle dash of luxury to complete the serene scene below.

2. Warmth

Incorporating warmth transforms an ordinary room into a gathering room. With a fireplace at the heart of your home, it will radiate warmth and comfort throughout each space. If you can’t have a fireplace, you can still achieve the hygge effect with candles and soft, warm lighting.

Surround your design with tiles that unite the fireplace with the room. Tiles with a glossy finish reflect light and draw attention to the toasty flames.

3. Uplifting Messages

The goal of hygge is to create warm, fuzzy feelings. Display motivational sayings as artwork in a room. The message of your signage should reflect the attitude or ambiance in your home. Uplifting quotes seamlessly lighten the mood of a room. West Bay Homes created this encouraging message entirely out of mosaic tiles.

4. Color

Color plays an important role in any design because it sets the tone of the room. To revitalize your space, incorporate a color palette inspired by nature. Soft tints of grey, green, brown and pink exemplify hygge. Most of all, include tones of white throughout your home because it is the most representative color of Scandinavian chic style.

To create a feeling of luxury, embellish your design with accents of gold.

5. Nature

Bring the outdoors in with elements of nature. A common way people escape their busy lives is by immersing themselves in nature. There’s something about nature that rejuvenates the soul.

Lush leaves, bouquets of flowers or potted plants stimulate a hygge feeling in a room. The natural variations in greenery allow endless opportunities for decoration. Vibrant flowers make for great accent pieces while greenery complements the neutral colors in a room. The organic liveliness of plants inspires growth and a better frame of mind.

“Adding plants is a really easy way to bring a little bit of the outdoors in. It’s instant hygge!” – Kirsty Froelich

Growing plants in your home doesn’t require a dip into your savings account or a botany degree. The Sill is a great resource for first-time plant parents. They offer a wide variety of beautiful, inexpensive and low-maintenance plants.

Installing wood or wood look tile is another great way to bring nature into your home. Tile made of real wood creates a rustic presence and helps intensify the coziness of a den.

How can you incorporate hygge into your own home? Create a spa oasis in your bathroom with candles, fluffy robes and blush-toned tile. Complete the cabin feel in your den with the roaring flame of a fireplace, wood-look tile and accents of greenery. Boost the blissful aura in a studio apartment with welcoming signs and lush foliage. With the five elements of hygge, you can increase the sense of contentment in any space.
